Firefighter and dad of two Mick Bird, 43, passed away after taking ill while on the way to an
emergency.

Despite being given first aid by his colleagues, he later died in hospital.

Bunches of flowers were left outside Shepshed Fire and Rescue Station to pay tribute to Mick, who
has been saving lives in the area for the past 21 years.
His devastated colleagues in the brigade, both locally and from across the UK, as well as workmates
and friends, have all paid tribute to him.

Station manager at Shepshed Steve Young, who has known Mick ever since he joined the service, said:
Mick was a dedicated family man.

He could always be relied upon in whatever was expected of him.

He was professional but was also a popular guy who had a great sense of humour.

“Mick was respected and admired by his fellow colleagues both at the station and in the
brigade?"

Retained firefighter Mick, who was born and bred in Shepshed, leaves behind a wife, Angela and
teenage children Tanya and Danny.

Managing director at Shepshed’s Dunlop Bestobell, where Mick worked and still managed to do
overtime despite his fire service duties, Kay Juss, said: “Mick was a big character. In his
earlier years one of the managers had commented ‘it was like employing Robin Hood - cheeky
chappy.’

Dad, You were the most amazing person I ever met. Living without your silly weird but funny jokes
& your smile, sometime becomes unbearable. We still struggle to live without you. Some days are
harder than others. You was never ment to leave us and thats the hardest thing to come to terms
with. Your funeral was Beautiful. There was so many firemen & all th shop around Shepshed shut,
just for you. I know what you would be saying though but Dad doesn't this just show how special
you was to everyone. Even though I got older & we grew appart I will still always be your little
girl. I will never take my necklace off that you brought me reading "Daddies Little Girl"
